HealthEConnect Students Dive Into Innovation Through Study Visits

In recent months, students from the Health Innovation Specialization at the Master’s in Impact Entrepreneurship and Innovation (MIEI) program — a joint initiative between Nova School of Business and Economics and NOVA Medical School — had the opportunity to participate in three enriching study visits, each offering a unique perspective on how innovation is reshaping healthcare.

On April 10th, students explored the CUF Oncology Unit, delving into the complexities of cancer care. The field visit was an opportunity to trace the patient journey from diagnosis to treatment and discover how multidisciplinary teams and innovative technologies are integrated throughout oncology services.

Students toured laboratories, intervention rooms, and research facilities, gaining an in-depth perspective on the real-world application of oncology innovations. We extend our gratitude to Professor Isabel Fernandes and the CUF Oncology Department for facilitating such an inspiring and educational visit.

On April 24th, students visited the Cardiology Department at Hospital da Luz as part of their Medical Advances Specifics course. The immersive experience allowed them to witness firsthand the role of technological advancements in cardiology, from diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation.

Highlights included:

  • Live observation of echocardiograms
  • A guided tour of the catheterization lab and interventional imaging tools
  • Insights into coronary angioplasty and stent placement procedures
  • A deep dive into cardiac rehabilitation practices supported by cutting-edge technologies

This visit provided students with a tangible understanding of how clinical innovation is improving cardiovascular patient outcomes. Special thanks to Professor Helder Dores and the entire Cardiology team for their valuable insights and warm welcome.

On May 16th, the students exchanged lab coats for aprons in a hands-on workshop at the Kitchen Lab of NOVA Medical School. As part of the elective course Introduction to Lifestyle Nutrition, led by Professor Gabriela Ribeiro, students prepared a variety of evidence-based, health-focused recipes.

Among the delicious dishes were:

  • Lentil-pumpkin soup with nutty garnish
  • Multiseed pumpkin-walnut bread
  • Mung bean salad with citric dressing
  • Salmon fillet en papillote
  • Skyr cheesecake
  • Hazelnut chocolate spread
  • Banana raspberry bread
  • Cashew & vanilla spread

The workshop emphasized practical skills in preparing nutrient-rich, cost-effective meals, combining nutritional science with real-world culinary practice.

These immersive learning experiences reflect the HealthEConnect program’s commitment to bridging academic knowledge with practical, real-world healthcare innovation — preparing students to drive impactful change in the sector.
